The Beauty of Connection: Documenting Faith and Female Surf
“The typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, ‘What? You too? I thought I was the only one!”
This past month, I had the delightful privilege of photographing and filming an extraordinary gathering of over 30 women who came together on the gorgeous shores of Devon. Hosted by Christian Surfers, this women’s weekend was a celebration of faith, friendship, and a shared love for the ocean. What unfolded was not merely a retreat but a beautiful reminder of the resilience, courage, and joy that we can find when we come together to encourage one another.
Getting ready to Surf
As the women arrived, some greeted old friends with familiar warmth, while others stepped into this community for the very first time, carried by faith and a longing for connection. The weekend was open to surfers of all skill levels, from seasoned wave riders to those stepping on a board for the very first time. United by a shared love of the ocean, each participant brought a unique story, woven into the fabric of the weekend through laughter, letting go, shared faith and moments of quiet reflection.
The sea itself became a poignant metaphor for life. Its ebb and flow mirrored the challenges and triumphs shared by the women. Some spoke openly about the storms they’ve faced—loss, life challenges, uncertainty—and yet, like the ocean, they demonstrated a deep and enduring strength beneath the surface. These women inspired one another, offering biblical truths and heartfelt encouragement to remind us that even when life’s waters feel turbulent, faith in God’s presence and love towards us can anchor us.
For me, documenting this weekend was about more than capturing smiles or perfect waves. It was about freezing moments of play, resilience, and connection—a way I can tell stories through my lens. Behind the lens, I saw women reclaiming something essential: the permission to play, to rest, and to support one another. In a culture where we are encouraged into individualism, here were women going against the flow, and building community, fellowship, and sisterhood.

One moment that struck me deeply was the way these women leaned into friendship. In a world that so often isolates us—distracted by hustle culture, social media, and the never-ending chase for success—these women chose to fight for connection. They carved out space for one another, proving that true friendship doesn’t just happen; it’s nurtured, tended to, and fiercely protected.
“Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.
”
As I stood at the shoreline with my camera, I couldn’t help but think about the state of my own heart. The ocean teaches us to pay attention—to notice when the tide pulls us away from shore and to realign ourselves with the steady rhythm of its waves. In the same way, I was reminded to check in with my own heart. Am I guarding it against bitterness and distraction? Am I filling it with beauty, truth, and the life-giving connections that fuel my creativity and purpose?
